Today, most young female artists would be mystified if asked whether they feel marginalised by their gender. Yet just four decades ago, few argued with Linda Nochlin's legendary 1969 essay "Why are there no great women artists?" in which she declared that the art world was "stultifying, oppressive and discouraging" to artists who were not "white, preferably middle class and, above all, male". Nochlin had the statistics on her side.

With Armory Arts Week 2010 now underway, art lovers and collectors have an overwhelming number of choices when it comes to the visual arts in New York this weekend. The main fairs – which include the Armory Fair and the Art Dealers Association of America's Art Show at the Park Avenue Armor – include booths lined with works by big-name artists like Louise Bourgeois and Marsden Hartley priced in the six and seven figure range. But for edgier – and often more affordable – art there are roughly a dozen sate

Jim Burke and Sue Conhiser shared the spotlight at Byllye Lanes on Wednesday night. Burke, bowling in the Alcas League, threw games of 259, 237 and 266 for 762 series to lead the men. Conhiser, kegling in the Starlite League, had an honor game of 200 as part of her 525 series to lead the women.

The New Museum's exhibition of artworks from the collection of Dakis Joannou, one of its trustees, has arrived. The project did not sound like a good idea when it was announced last fall. Seeing it up close does not change that.

The young creative director of the famous house has consistently pushed the boundaries of modern clothing, since he made his debut in 1998. This sci-fi collection, however, with its eye-jolting collision of man-made materials, hi-tech colour, and luxury fabrics was his most exploratory and advanced yet. New machinery and lasers had to be sourced and installed at the Balenciaga atelier in order to construct the technically-complex designs.

Friday night was the official opening of this new exhibit at the Flag Art Foundation. In attendance were Chuck Close , Peter Max , Richard Phillips, Corban Walker, Glenn Fuhrman, Cynthia Rowley, Bill Powers , etc., who all got the first look at the exhibit. "Size DOES Matter" is a collection of art from around the world that explores the idea of how the scale of works affects the viewer's perception.

Until the article I recently read, mannequins in their practical form held little interest for me; however mannequins in art have always attracted me, most likely due to my obsession with fashion coupled with my fascination with unsettling representations of people (and who doesn't love to be unsettled?). Incorporating mannequins -- invented to market and sell fashion ideas -- into non-consumerist functions is another aspect of mannequin art I find appealing.
